This limited edition replica, cast in artist's plaster from a latex negative, then hand tinted, is of a 250 million year old coelacanth fossil, Whiteia woodwardi, found near Ankitokazo in north-western Madagascar. The original is from a split eotriassic nodule, a concretion of limestone which formed around the fossil as a result of percolating water containing dissolved minerals encountering an oxidizing "halo" in the sediment surrounding the fossil (Mark Marcisz). The nodules are exposed as the surrounding formation erodes. The realistic replica reproduces the nodule to a depth of approx 3/4". It shows scales, fin rays, and bony head structure (more clearly than this web image represents). Size = 6.25 inches in width. The original cost Dinofish.com more than $2,000!
